TMAC Podcast Webinar Resource Page
The following resources, products, or ideas were mentioned during my webinar, “The Power of the Podcast: How Podcasting Can Help Your Brand or Business” on May 26th, 2021.
HOW TO START A PODCAST
Overcast was the podcast listener that I recommended, especially since you can intentionally create categories (ie. to listen to other podcasts in your desired niche, or track topics, or learn about podcasting etc). I personally also like to speed up my podcasts, which you can do easily with Overcast.
Garageband is what I recommended Mac users start out with in terms of podcast editing. Audacity is what I would recommend for non-Mac users. Audacity is harder to learn, but, in my opinion, is a better product whether you’re a Mac user or not. However, if you’re already familiar with Garageband, then start there.
The microphones that I recommended for starting out were - the Blue Yeti, the Shure MV7, and the Audio-Technica ATR2100. I use the Blue Yeti, and it’s not the best mic, but it’s worked well for me over the years.
For hosting your podcast (and distributing it), the gold standard is Libsyn, but you could also use something like Podbean. I’ve used both, and I’d recommend both.
WHY STARTING A PODCAST CAN BE WORTH IT
Namely, the opportunity to monetize if you get large enough by selling ads, or using a user-supported system like Patreon where people can pay to hear extra content etc. There are also other services like Buy Me A Coffee where people can essentially “tip” you for your efforts. You can also aim to monetize with advertising and so forth. It’s not necessary easy to monetize podcasts, but it can be done, and podcasts can also help fuel and draw awareness to your other money-making efforts, even if it’s just the public opportunity to showcase your expertise.
Selling products or services can also be something you can do via a podcast. For example, if you had a podcast on knitting that became popular, you can sell an ebook that you created on knitting that you promote on your podcast, or even offer one-on-one coaching.
MAKING A PODCAST
Your podcast will be distributed by your host (Podbean or Libsyn), but you can also use the content elsewhere. You can film yourself recording and put that onto YouTube, or even do live streams of your podcast. Some people even replay their episodes on social platforms like Clubhouse. In the beginning though, I’d focus on just creating a good product and then explore this down the line. We do now record audio and video for I’m Anxious About, though. We don’t quite know how we’ll repurpose the video, but it doesn’t hurt to have.
For transcription, you can use a number of different services. I’ve found Otter.ai to be pretty good, but you could also try hiring someone to do it on Fiverr or Upwork or using a free transcription tool that I’m sure exists somewhere. You can use those transcripts for the basis of your show notes, which you can host on a new website attached to your podcast, or a landing page on your existing site.
